The Great British Bake Off returns to BBC2 from tomorrow, 20 August with Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood and a new set of baking contestants. The first series had 10 participants, with 12 baking in series two and three and this series has 13 participants !! However, this year’s show got off to a gruesome start, as apparently every contestant sliced their fingers on day one. Did you know that in the early 1900’s the great lawns of private estates were filled with countless croquet and badminton fanatics. They spent their summer days playing these games until the early evening. Of course, to keep them from becoming dehydrated they had regular stops for drinks and their favourite choice of refreshment was ‘tea’, which was taken in the lawns and countryside amid the badminton, shuttlecocks and rosewood mallets.
This year they have got not one, but two competitions – one for the professionals and one for the home bakers. The categories are the same for both competitions, with four to choose from. A winner will be announced for each category, and will then go forward to contend for the title of National Cupcake Champion. Fifteen finalists will be shortlisted in each category. The shortlisted finalists will be revealed in September, with the finals taking place in association with Cake International, on 9 November its Birmingham show. The Tea Stop is a 1966 RML Bus, that has been converted into a retro style diner with a kitchen downstairs. The Bus had its first outing as a café at Wychwood music festival in 2009. Since then it has been to a number of festivals and events and are always on the look out for new ones. They serve tasty Cakes and Cream~Teas on vintage china.
