As a true lover of dark chocolate it made my day when I read that dark chocolate turns ‘healthy’ in your stomach. Scientists in America claim that dark chocolate ferments in the stomach and turns into useful anti-inflammatory compounds which are good for the heart. Of course they also point out that some chocolate can be high in sugars and fat. The team tested cocoa powder and said that by adding fruit to the chocolate this would aid the fermentation process. However the British Heart Foundation warn that people should not be eating chocolate to help their hearts just yet.…

In ‘The WeekÂ’ magazine Hotel of the week section ‘The Drunken DuckÂ’ in Ambleside, Cumbria was voted their favourite in the 22nd February edition. Set high above Ambleside, commanding dramatic views of the Lake District fells, the Duck stands at a crossroads, a traditional Lakeland dwelling, reflecting the simplicity, beauty and longevity of its natural environment. From these same fells, they draw not only the water for their beers brewed on site, but also the inspiration for their restaurant, which showcases the extensive range of quality produce that Cumbria has to offer. To brighten the one you love on Valentine’s Day you could chose from either a heart shaped Fabulous Flapjack, all sticky golden syrup and soft buttery oats , or a Jammy Heart with its crispy shortbread base, sharp raspberry jam filling, sweet almondy frangipane and a sprinkling of toasted flaked almonds or…
I held an ‘Afternoon Tea’ for the girls (well we are all in our 60’s but girls at heart) today with a little help from my friends daughter. The gorgeous cup cakes and heart shaped biscuits were done by my friends daughter, which I am sure you will agree are gorgeous. I made an Orange Cake, a Chocolate Victoria Sandwich Cake, and a Fruit Cake… Hubby did us some lovely sandwiches of smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise and cress and ham and tomato 🙂 The quality of the finish and design in the biscuits and cup cakes looked like they had…

Tea is great for getting rid of odours in your fridge. Just fill a cotton or muslin bag with green tea leaves and leave inside the fridge. If you are using loose tea then keep it afterwards for a fertilizer. It contains useful quantities of nitrogen and other nutrients that your plants will love. Empty the leaves onto your flower bed or compost heap. Acid-loving plants like ferns, citrus trees, and gardenias thrive when you add a little tea-spiked water to their soil once in a while. Used tea bags are great to smooth out wrinkles on your eyes. Allow…

Have you some mismatched cups and saucers? Well ceramics designer Richard Brendon has scoured antique shops in London to find a selection of orphaned saucers. One of his oldest is a Derby piece dating back to 1800. He also has some delicate teacups gilded in platinum and gold to go with them. They cost £85 for a cup and saucer. We have some white china with gilded handles and initials painted on them, I think I should get them valued. I do use them when friends come for afternoon tea but I have been very naughty and popped them in…
While sitting in the Doctor’s waiting room I picked up the usual magazines to read and found a Woman and Home that was only a couple of months old and not years old, so I started to read through it. One of the articles was Mary Berry helping a lady with her baking skills and she had one very good tip for her which I knew you would all appreciate me passing it onto you. The ‘All In One’ technique to baking – simply put ALL your ingredients into a bowl at once – the order they go in doesn’t…

The Tea Trail with Simon Reeve is on BBC @ 8pm tonight, Sunday 12th January. As we all know us Brits simply ‘adore’ tea, and apparently every year in Britain we drink more than a thousand cups of tea and coffee each !!! spending more than a ‘billion pounds’ on it. The Tea Trail is a two-part series and follows Simon Reeve (who I am a big fan of) as he visits Africa and Southeast Asia to explore the trade in these leaves and beans, from plantation to pot. He starts his journey tonight in Mombasa, Kenya so if you…
