Bettys Tea Rooms, Yorkshire The original Harrogate café opened in 1919 and made Bettys an institution (there are now six branches). Specialities include “fat rascals”, juicy scones made with citrus peel and decorated with cherries and almonds (01423 814070; bettys.co.uk).

Bea’s of Bloomsbury, London A haven of charming china teapots, mismatched crockery and quirky cakes (020 7242 8330; beasofbloomsbury.com).

Abbey Cottage Tea Rooms, Dumfries This place has been run by three generations of the same family, and received awards of excellence for its speciality teas, cakes and atmosphere (01387 850377; abbeycottagetearoom.com).

Rocke Cottage Tea Rooms, Shropshire Delicious home-made treats accompanied by soft Twenties music (01588 660631; rockecottagetearoom.co.uk).

One of the latest craze on afternoon tea and tea shops prompted a lady to convert a caravan into a tea room which she then takes to different events throughout the year – and makes a bomb!!! So, why not have a go at that :):)

      Ah Bettys.

Now that is a real institution.

York is probably my favourite, though Harrogate is good too.
