One of my local tea shops has been given another Tea Guild Award of Excellence. The Ollerton Watermill Tea Shop on Market Place, Ollerton, Nr Newark, Nottinghamshire is not far from me on the edge of Sherwood Forest and is the only water-powered mill working in Nottinghamshire.
Its by the River Maun and was built in 1713 on the site of a mill mentioned in the Domesday Book.
It was put back to work in 1921 with the Mettam family, who have been millers for many generations with a family that is traced back to 1635.
It was restored in 1993 and opened to the public by the Mettam’s family who all work and run the tea shop.
It has wonderful views from the window looking upstream to the watermill and mill race and the bonus is that it is on the doorstep of Rufford Abbey and Park.
All cakes are baked on the premises with flour that is ground and sold in the mill. The Mettam’s are careful about what goes onto their menu which also includes a selection of speciality teas. The tea shop was an inspirational stroke of genius when it was set up to offer refreshments to mill visitors, and its popularity quickly soared. Sisters-in-law Kate and Ellen Mettam are very particular about the produce that goes into their menu, and the result is home-baked cakes, quiches, salads and mouth-watering puddings; the cream tea with its three plain or fruit scones, jam, cream and strawberries is a real winner.

Monday, Tuesday: closed except Bank Holidays.
Afternoon Tea can be enjoyed ALL DAY at Ollerton Watermill Tea Shop from 10.30 am to 4.00pm with last orders taken by 3.30pm
Lunch is served from 11.45am to 2.45pm

i have a friend who can’t walk who says those that can really should. I had never thought of it like that so I try to remember it on days when I just don’t want to. i wish you could gym too x

Barmac, I have been over there in England. The North West was interesting. I drank too much tea. The whole day I drank tea. Earl Grey hot and with milk. 😉
